Buyer Guides & Vehicle Reviews

The Geely Starray EM-i has earned a five-star ANCAP safety rating (the highest possible result) under the 2023-2025 assessment criteria.

Introduced to Australia in September 2025, the Starray EM-i is a plug-in hybrid medium SUV available in two variants. The rating was published in February 2026 and applies to all variants built from June 2025 onwards.

At Barton's Geely Capalaba, we provide the full ANCAP picture for every Geely model we stock. The Starray EM-i is a strong result across all four categories, and here is what it means in detail for Redlands buyers.

What is an ANCAP Safety Rating, and Why Does it Matter?

ANCAP independently crash-tests and rates new vehicles sold in Australia and New Zealand. A five-star rating is the highest result achievable, applied using the same criteria for all passenger vehicles. Plug-in hybrid variants are assessed on the same basis as petrol models.

ANCAP assesses four key categories: Adult Occupant ProtectionChild Occupant ProtectionVulnerable Road User Protection, and Safety Assist.

Adult Occupant Protection: 90% (36.23 out of 40)

What Was Tested

The Geely Starray EM-i was assessed through a frontal offset test at 50 km/h, a full-width frontal test at 50 km/h, a side impact at 60 km/h, an oblique pole test at 32 km/h, far-side impact tests, and whiplash protection assessments.

What the Results Show

Adult occupant protection is one of the Starray EM-i's strongest categories at 90 per cent. The passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal offset test with no deductions. Both the driver and front passenger received adequate lower leg protection, with good results across all other body regions. The compatibility penalty was 3.47 points.

In the full-width frontal test, chest protection for the driver and rear passenger was adequate, with good protection elsewhere. The side impact scored the maximum 6.00 out of 6 points with good protection across all critical body regions. For Redlands families navigating the arterial intersections along Redland Bay Road and through the Capalaba retail precinct, that maximum side impact result reflects real-world protection. The oblique pole test returned 5.93 out of 6.

The whiplash protection score was 3.99 out of 4 and the far-side impact score was the full 4.00 out of 4.00, with the centre airbag providing good head protection for both front occupants and good prevention of excursion in the far-side vehicle-to-vehicle scenario.

The rescue and extrication score was 3.00 out of 4. Both doors and windows passed submergence testing. Multi-collision braking and eCall both contributed to the score.

Child Occupant Protection: 87% (42.81 out of 49)

What Was Tested

Child occupant protection is assessed through dynamic crash testing using six-year-old and ten-year-old child dummies in frontal offset and side impact scenarios, as well as a practical assessment of how standard Australian and New Zealand child restraints can be installed.

What the Results Show

The Starray EM-i returned perfect dynamic child occupant crash test results. In the frontal offset test, both dummies scored good protection across all critical body regions, earning the maximum 16.00 out of 16 points. In the side impact, all body areas were good for both dummies, earning the maximum 8.00 out of 8 points. Perfect scores in both crash tests is a meaningful result for Redlands families.

ISOFix lower anchorages are fitted to both rear outboard seats, with top tether anchorages across all rear positions. Most child restraint types can be installed in most rear positions. One booster seat could not be correctly installed in the centre rear position. Our team at Bartons Geely Capalaba can help you find the right seating arrangement for your family.

A child presence detection (CPD) system is fitted as standard but did not meet ANCAP's requirements in testing and was not awarded points. The system is present; buyers should note this testing outcome.

Vulnerable Road User Protection: 86% (54.44 out of 63)

What Was Tested

VRU protection covers the physical construction of the vehicle's bonnet and windscreen and the performance of the AEB system in detecting and reacting to pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

Physical Impact Results

The bonnet and windscreen provided good to adequate head protection to pedestrians over most of the surface, with marginal to poor results at the stiff windscreen pillars and the front edge of the bonnet. Pelvis protection was good or adequate. Femur and lower leg protection were both good, with maximum knee and tibia points awarded.

Autonomous Emergency Braking: Pedestrians, Cyclists, and Motorcyclists

The VRU AEB system operates from 10 km/h to 90 km/h in forward scenarios.

Forward pedestrian AEB was rated good, with collisions avoided or mitigated in most tests including turning scenarios, day and night. Whether navigating the school zones along Redland Bay Road, sharing the road with cyclists on the Redlands Coast trail network, or moving through the Capalaba Central car park, the forward AEB covers the scenarios Redlands drivers face daily. AEB Backover was rated adequate, providing meaningful reverse pedestrian protection in driveways and car parks.

Cyclist AEB was rated good at most test speeds including turning. The Starray EM-i provides an information alert when a cyclist is approaching from behind, though no warning or door retention is offered. Motorcyclist AEB earned the full 6.00 out of 6 points, with good performance in turning scenarios. Lane support in car-to-motorcyclist emergency lane keeping scenarios earned 2.50 out of 3, relevant for motorway driving on the Gateway and Pacific Motorway routes used regularly by Redlands commuters.

Safety Assist: 82% (14.92 out of 18)

What Was Tested

Safety Assist evaluates AEB for car-to-car scenarios, lane support, speed assistance, seat belt reminders, and driver monitoring.

Car-to-Car AEB

The car-to-car AEB system operates from 4 km/h to 150 km/h. Testing returned good performance across all four standard car-to-car scenarios, scoring 3.68 out of 4. AEB Junction was good, relevant to the intersection-heavy road network through the Redlands. AEB Crossing was adequate, with autonomous braking in some but not all crossing scenarios. AEB Head-On was adequate (0.50 out of 1).

Lane Support System

The lane support system operates from 65 to 170 km/h and earned the full 3.00 out of 3 points, with good LKA and ELK performance.

Speed Assistance and Driver Monitoring

iACC is standard alongside camera and map-based speed sign recognition, an intelligent speed limiter, and a manual speed limiter. A direct DMS detecting distraction and fatigue scored 1.25 out of 2. Seat belt reminders with occupancy detection for all positions scored the full 1.00 out of 1.
